I just realized that I haven't posted anything on this site in over a month. I've been too preoccupied with my own blog and the Pittsburgh sports teams to make it on here to post something. But now with the dream of a Stanley Cup victory over, I guess it is time to get back to doing something that doesn't cause my blood pressure to rise, reviewing comic books.
So while I know "New Mutants" #1 came out a few weeks ago, I think it was good enough to get a full review. Here we go:
Let me start off by saying I was never a big New Mutants fan. Well, the original team anyway. I wasn't reading comics back when the original series was out and after going back and reading them I wasn't too impressed. I understood the reason for the team (back when the X franchised wasn't water down to the point of irrelevance) but I never really got into the characters. Cannonball was okay and Sunspot at least had a personality, but that was about it. Dani Moonstar was always doing stuff with spirit bears that I never understood, Karma had a weird thing with her little siblings, Magma was a haughty princess or something, Warlock was annoying, Doug Ramsey could talk a bunch of languages, and Magik was killed and resurrected so many times that they should have just made her the Phoenix. So not really having a pre-established connection to the original team, my hopes for this series were pretty low. Thankfully, the series gets off to a good start.
The series starts off with Karma trying to help some girl who is obviously trapped inside her own mind. Magik, who for those who read the 'X-Infernus' limited series and knew that she was back from Limbo, shows up at the X-Men's HQ in California. The youngest X-Men, who were called New Mutants themselves at one point, are not too happy to see her since the last time they tangled with her Anole lost an arm and Pixie lost a part of her soul. Nice to see they actually kept up with continuity there, even though it has only been a few months since the events happened. Cannonball and Sunspot intervene and Magik warns them that Karma and Dani are about to die.
They decide to recruit Magma and go after their former teammates. With Cyclops' approval, the four member team gears up and head towards Colorado to find their friends. Magik gets spooked by a missing girl on a poster and decides to go off and find her. Magma goes to help her leaving the boys to find answers in a local bar. The patrons don't take kindly to mutants being around. During the scuffle Sunspot breaks down the back door to find an unconscious and tied up Karma in a catatonic state. Meanwhile, the girls go to talk to the parents of the missing girl and Magik promptly breaks into their house. She makes her way to the basement where they think they have found Karma locked up inside a box. But how is that possible if she is tied up in the back of a bar? When the girls open the box they are greeted with a very big surprise.
I have to say that I prefer this version of Cannonball. He was gone through so many drastic changes over the years and none of them have really ever transitioned smoothly. He went from the hayseed boy in the original series, to the hard nosed leader of X-Force, to a whiner who never thought he was good enough when he graduated to the X-Men, then back to a hay seed for no apparent reason, and now to this latest persona of being wise without whiny and more self assured. I think it is a good direction for the character.
As for the others, I don't know what to think about Sunspot. I'm having flashbacks to that awful Reignfire storyline from the 90s where he was the villain and the hero or something stupid like that. He has always been Sam's best friend, but lately they have cast him in a slightly villain role for being part of the Hellfire Club. I think he lost that position which means he is back on a good team apparently. Karma and Magma still do nothing for me. I'm really trying to come around with Magik. I always thought that her story was well done and it had been completed. NO need to keep bringing her back every few years to do stories in Limbo. But I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt her, especially considering what emerges from the box.
If Karma is in two places at once, then where is Dani? What was in the box? Wanna know what happens next? Buy the book, available at Bent Wookee Comix located at 127 Fairfield Avenue in the West End section of Johnstown. See ya there!

One of the coolest things I like about the shop is the myriad of "creative" types who patronize the store. Writers, artists, and what-not. So I had a brilliant idea that we should have a Creator's Mixer! A chance for those who are producing whatever to highlight their work and make some connections. Then I realised that for one: I don't like to share my rum and two: I would inevitably get too drunk, make awkward passes, end up with a bunch of "your my babies' daddy" calls, and would have to move and change the name of the shop. *cough*
AnyWHO! The point of all this is that after several conversations with people, it's come to my attention how many "creative" types there are in the area. Obviously everyone knows that Jay and I are working (still working) on the graphic novel, SIX IN THE MOURNING. (I say obvious, because we're promotional whores and force it into any conversation we can).
But I'd like this post to be all about YOUR SELF-PROMOTION! What have you got? What are you working on? Here's your chance to hype it up a bit! If you're from around the Johnstown area here's where you can post away! Leave links to art, writing samples, web-comics, short films, blogs, or whatever, it doesn't have to be comic related. Maybe you'll make some connections, maybe you'll just pimp yourself, who knows what could come of this.

Over at http://www.thefwoosh.com/ they are recruiting...kind of... representatives of SLOTH/INDIFFERENCE/and PASSIVE AGGRESSIVENESS! Why prepare for war when there might be something good on t.v.?

We will be opening after 5:00 on WEDNESDAY MAY 13TH. Yes, unfortunately NEW COMICS will be arriving late. Trust me, I'm just as sad as you are about this. No emoticon can capture my angst! But here's a pic of a girl enjoying her visit to the dentist.
