Hitting The Reset Button...But Not Really

If you read "Ultimatum", then I feel sorry for you because I did too. It was quite possibly the worst event series ever written. It was supposed to be a deck clearing exercise for the Ultimate universe, which mainly consisted of killing off over half of the X-Men in extremely dumb ways. I mean, seriously, how was Magneto able to control Cyclops eyes being open and firing Iron Man's weapons to kill Wolverine? The whole thing defied logic and actually made the reader end up with a lower IQ at the end.

So I did not have a good feeling going into the new 'Ultimate Comics' line, which for now will only feature the Avengers and Spider-Man. I figured they were going to hit the reset button entirely and start all over, which would really have pissed me off but at least they wouldn't acknowledge "Ultimatum". But apparently that is not what this new line is about. Sure, it's about resetting the issues back to the supposedly money making issue #1, but it is set in the same world. Magneto did destroy most of New York and a lot of people are dead. So while I found the whole "Ultimatum" story line to be a big ball of shit wrapped in a turd taco, I actually respected the fact they weren't going to act like it never happened.

Nick Fury is back from his dimensional trip which saw him star in another very shitty book, 'Squadron Supreme', and he returns to a city that has been decimated. The Triskelion is a shell but is quickly being rebuilt. Hawkeye is there with Fury to show him what has happened in his absence and to make him an offer he can't refuse. Carol Danvers, who is now the head of S.H.I.E.L.D, needs Fury to lead a black ops team to capture an Avengers member who has gone rogue. It won't be easy considering the fact the rogue member is none other than Captain America.

Flashback to a day earlier when Cap and Hawkeye were attempting to stop a break in at the Baxter Building by agents of A.I.M. They were able to secure one of the two A.I.M. helicopters, but while attempting to secure the second one, Cap came face to face with the Red Skull. In a shocking display of power and fighting prowess, the Red Skull hands Cap his ass in a pretty brutal beating. Just as he is about to throw Cap out of the helicopter, Skull whispers something into his ear then unceremoniously dumps Cap out the side. Hawkeye dives out of the other helicopter to make the save and is shocked to find out what the Skull had said to Cap.

What did the Red Skull say? Did Fury know the whole time? How does Hawkeye breath with that mask on? Wanna know what happens next? Buy the book, available at Bent Wookee Comix located at 127 Fairfield Avenue in the West End section of Johnstown. See ya there!
